Hello Munkfans. Summer is upon us, school is over, and it's time to get to those projects we've been wanting to work on for so long. And as the new founder, I really love competition, so to kick it off, I'm going to create one!

PRIZES
Prizes are a possibility depending on how many participate, I'll let everyone know before time is up. This could be anywhere from Paypal cash, a Chipmunk movie of your choice, a plush stuffie of your favorite munk, or the whole gang! Like I said, I haven't decided yet but I'll try and be sure that there is SOMETHING (won't promise anything). If we have enough entries, there may be prizes for second and third place. As long as my financial things are going the way they are and I'm still alive, I'll make sure there's something.

VOTING
Winner will be chosen by vote, and if you enter the competition you must vote and you cannot vote for yourself (no holding back or voting on yourself to increase your odds). Voting will also be anonymous so no one can see whose in the lead and then vote accordingly; vote for the one you like the most. Tie-breakers will be re-voted on. Some places allow multiple voting, but I've seen the best entries lose to everyone picking something they think is second-best, and I'd rather not complicate the system.

THEME
Songs of the munks! The Chipmunks and Chipettes have done over a hundred different songs over the years. All you have to do is portray one of their songs in a piece of art. For example, the classic "Christmas Don't Be Late" can be your named theme and you can have the various toys from the song in the picture with the munks. Or, you can create a picture of Alvin and Britney playing out a scene "So What" (like them arguing at dinner with David paying the tab). The interpretation can be pretty broad (The Chipettes did the Macarena, and simply showing them doing the dance in Hispanic clothing is good enough for me).

Only limitation here is that the song must be official. The Chipmunks (and Chipettes) have done a whopping thirty-eight albums (to my knowledge), and you can find them here:  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category… You can also do shorts that they've done in the episodes that might not be listed.

ENTRIES
- Except for screen caps, all art forms are allowed to enter, and it doesn't have to be something newly made; it can be something you made years ago, but it cannot have been previously submitted on Deviant Art (though you can remake or edit something that is old if you like).

- Munks from any art range or age are accepted, from the original 60s show all the way to the modern CGI versions, or even re-envisioned forms such as full human form. If you want an OC (original character) they must be clearly a munk type though.

- Only TWO entries per contestant, and they must be different pieces of art in two different categories (Digital, Craft, Mixed Media, etc.).

- Short stories and poems with a maximum of 8,000 words are welcome, but aren't recommended (they usually don't do well in full-scale competitions like this). You may include an attached picture though that you made.

- Entries can be submitted to the "Summer 2012 Competition" folder once I get it up (sometime tomorrow).

- DEADLINE is June 25th. Voting will begin a day or two after that. Once we know how many people submitted then I'll know how long to keep the voting up, but at least for a few days after July 4th (an important American holiday).

If you have any other questions, ask below. Let's get started!

I have a question!
Does "Vinny's Lullaby" count? I realize that Vinny sang this, but the boys did join in. I'm just wondering if it would count for the contest if I drew a picture for it.

Yes, if the boys joined in and sang then perfectly acceptable!

Well I'd enter, but considering you people seem to be biased against stories (which is all I can do well) I think it would be a waste of my valuable time. :P

I'm certainly not biased towards stories at all; trouble is 85%+ people browsing Deviant Art are here to see visual arts. Fan Fiction and Fictionpress are the core hubs for Internet stories.

Oh! Colonel! (Hope you don't mind me calling you that! XD )

I have a quick question, how many entries are required to be submitted so that this won't be cancel. You can definitely count on having me one though. XD

Eh, don't know; really hope it isn't canceled. I'm thinking we'd need at least 5 entries. First place is $50 worth of Chipmunk-related merchandise of choice.

And my Internet nick name is usually the 'Colonel'.

Oh don't worry about it. :aww: I'm just enjoying doing the piece of artwork based around the theme. : )

I actually have a question with the voting. :XD: Because I've seen this happen many times. We won't be able to beg for votes right? ^^; Because I don't feel comfortable asking others to vote, and won't do it. But I know others don't have a problem with asking others to. Which kind of leads to unfair voting. Plus, would there be a way that the voting won't go in favor of certain styles? Like I know CGI style is extremely popular, then the 80s, then human looks... :XD: Would there be a way to make sure it's fair voting? Not just because it's a particular artist or generation of munks?

:iconsweatdropplz:

I really hope you don't mind me asking. I was totally going to do it, but I just realized, I'm not sure if I would even stand a chance with my style. :XD: So I'm debating what to do. :XD:

Yeah, I did think of that. Unfortunately in my experience, this is hard to do. I've been on dozens of Internet groups for over 10 years and seen the good, bad, and ugly. I've also moderated four groups before but this is the first I'm an "admin" position of significant number of people.

The best way I've seen it done is to first announce your general competition, and if you get enough entries and interest, then you can divide it up into something more advanced. The problem is I can't afford prizes for more than maybe 2 different overall winners.

And while there are preferences for different art styles, good art is still good art.

>>>>>

As to your fear on request voting, you will have fans but they are extremely hard to come by. There are a number of ways to avoid this:

1. Moderate everything really strictly, make a rule out of it, be vigilant, and see who is voting for who. This takes a lot of time and energy but is doable with a strong enough mod force. Make everyone fear you for breaking the rule.

2. Advertise a lot so that you get a lot of unknown voters. Basically the few people that would helping someone out by voting won't make a big enough difference.

3. Attempt to get a general hierarchy of votes to choose the top 3-4 (or 25%) voted pieces of art. Then create a second ring of voting on the selected entries and determine an overall winner. This decreases the chances of victory through favoritism because now any favorites of those who didn't quite make it (and the artists themselves) will then be split to choosing their favorite.

I came up with two or three other ways but I think they're too complicated or unreliable.

Oh I see what you mean. :iconteheplz: I usually just get a vast amount of judges to decide for my groups. (I've run a lot also. :XD: One group I run is 150 plus members) and I help moderate one with 200 plus. I've always wanted to do the vote way, but the whole favortisism (sp) was my biggest fear with the judging. So I always avoided it)

:giggle: I mean, you can do it however you want. I'll probably still enter, but I doubt I'll make it far. :XD: Because I probably won't bother others for votes/my style is vastly different from any of the others. XD Plus, a lot of my watchers are non aatc fans that support me. But I'll just see what I can do.

I wanted to do the art piece anyway, and this contest is the perfect opprotunity to do it! :iconawwwplz:

PS: Thank you for replying. You're doing an amazing job as founder so far! Hope I'm not being a hassle with so many questions! XD

Yeah the judging part really helps if everyone knows the entrants. There is one group that does both: the judges basically look at all the entries together that got the best votes and then consolidate victors with like a stronger vote setting, but at least half of the victory still came from voters.

If it were up to me, I'd have completely anonymous entries, but I realized that wasn't going to be very possible on DA.

Oh! You mean like the judges decide which should be the final like 6? Then they vote for the rest? I think color me club takes that route. That's actually not a bad idea. ^^; I might use that for my later competitions.

I was thinking that too! Then, like you said, it's just not possible. XD Anyomous votes, yes, but entries? Unfortunaely not. ;w;

Awe, I think you should at least try. You never know what you might get.

If we get enough interested people I might separate this into two categories for art and written competitions.
